“Senegal is endowed with several sources of renewable and fossil energy, including oil and gas, to strengthen its universal access to energy services. The country is not simply looking for electricity for lighting. It is also turning to energy aimed at strengthening modern cooking in order to encourage households to do without wood energy but also to strengthen energy efficiency in buildings, industry and above all to meet energy demand in the sector agricultural. The agricultural sector is one of the most important and most energy-intensive sectors, from production to consumption, including the reduction of harvest losses and also storage efforts. In Senegal, the agricultural sector is still dependent on the very unpredictable rainfall regime and which is subject to many effects linked to climate change,” underlined the climate and energy transition manager at Enda Energie.

Samba Fall spoke this Thursday, February 15, 2024 in Dakar during the opening ceremony of a “Forum of non-state actors in Senegal on just and sustainable transitions” organized by Enda Energie in partnership with Ford Foundation.

This multi-actor dialogue framework intends to strengthen the communication dynamic around the issues, expectations and potential contributions in the implementation of systemic transitions and particularly the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) of Senegal.

This forum which takes place in the Senegalese capital brings together all categories of actors, namely local authorities, parliamentarians, public authorities represented by the Ministry of Oil and Energy, the Ministry of the Environment, Sustainable Development and ecological transition, all sectoral ministries in particular the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, the national private sector, grassroots community actors, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the Senegalese employers to discuss the conditions for implementing the observatory which will be responsible for conducting the JETP.

In clear terms, the said forum is part of an initiative which aims to facilitate the establishment of the observatory on systemic transitions to better collectively monitor and guide the choices of transformations and actions proposed at the national and territorial level but also to monitor the inclusive implementation of investment programs.

In a context where climate and energy issues are paramount, this forum represents an opportunity to deepen discussions on the observatory of just and sustainable transitions. The latter constitutes an opportunity to define a roadmap for socialization, identification and monitoring of concrete actions around transitions, for the benefit of non-state actors.
