Aïssatou Diouf responsable à l’ONG Enda Energie : « Le réchauffement climatique est à l’origine de l’érosion côtière »

XALIMANEWS: The advance of the sea along the Senegalese coast is a real problem. And according to Aïssatou Diouf, head of the NGO Enda Energie, global warming is the cause of these disruptions. She was the guest of Rfm morning this Tuesday. “Global warming is a global phenomenon that we notice throughout the world.

In Africa, Senegal is one of the 10 countries most affected by this phenomenon. However, the coastline is more affected, with coastal erosion, rising water levels and melting ice. This can happen on another continent and the impact is felt here,” says Ms. Diouf. She rewinds: “in St-Louis since 1929 we have noticed the advance of the sea, which shows that since then we have had no development policy and that is regrettable. Local authorities and the government must provide development and planning measures and for that a lot of money is needed, infrastructure is expensive.” And according to him, it would take an adaptation to better experience this change.

“The State is making efforts but it remains; they invest money but the technical studies which must be carried out are not carried out and this affects the expected results. It takes time for environmental impact studies to see if the dikes they are putting in place do not increase the damage, if we do not react the St-Louis region risks disappearing from the map. 20 years here,” she said.

Before emphasizing that “Africa’s share is minimal in the face of global warming, but we feel the consequences more. There needs to be a change in behavior; previously there was a strip of casuarina trees on the coast but people are destroying it to build houses, the sand dunes are also used for construction, this weakens the coastline and accentuates the advance of the sea. The excessive cutting of wood in the forests is also a warming phenomenon. Pollution is also one of the factors in this circumstance.”
