National Workshop on Climate and Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance


In a global context where the challenges posed by climate change are increasingly pressing, Senegal is actively engaged in the search for innovative solutions to strengthen its resilience. It is with this in mind that the third national workshop of the PMA-FARCC project was held on Thursday, December 16, 2021. This meeting, a continuation of the previous ones, aimed to contribute to a better understanding of financing and climate risk insurance, while strengthening dialogue between the stakeholders concerned.

Bringing together around thirty participants representing various stakeholders, such as government, civil society, the private sector and academia, the workshop was an opportunity to discuss crucial themes for the country's resilience in the face of challenges. climatic.

During the opening speech, the Sub-Prefect of Dakar underlined the importance of this multi-actor partnership within the framework of the FARCC project. He recalled the growing threats that climate change poses to biodiversity and people's livelihoods, emphasizing the need to update policies to align them with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The speakers addressed several key areas of reflection, notably the management of climate risks, the need for a regulatory framework for climate risk insurance, and the importance of raising awareness among populations to take out insurance. Concrete proposals have emerged, such as the definition of a reference document to which other policies must align, the institutionalization of insurance, or the integration of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the initiatives of 'insurance.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of organizing producers to develop structured, high-impact projects, as well as the need to regularly evaluate initiatives to capitalize on successes and avoid mistakes.

This national workshop laid the foundations for collective and coordinated action to strengthen Senegal's resilience in the face of climate challenges. Discussions between the different stakeholders made it possible to identify concrete avenues of action, ranging from raising public awareness about climate risk insurance to integrating the use of climate information into adaptation strategies. These initiatives reflect the country's continued commitment to finding innovative solutions to face future challenges.
